Laser Hair Removal – Is It For You

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Unwanted hairs or hairs in unwanted places can be a real source of heartache for anyone. Hair growth on the body generally differs from person to person for several reasons, but what seems to bring everybody together, as far as unwanted hair growth is concern, is that everybody wants the most effective way to get rid of these hairs with minimum pain and price.

There are several hair removal processes and each comes with its successes and side effects. Electrolysis and shaving seems to be the oldest hair removal procedures. Unlike shaving, electrolysis seems to be more painful, tends to damage the skin, especially delicate skin and the rate at which the hairs grow back is another concern. Shaving is a far more acceptable hair removal procedure. In most cases, men content themselves with good shavers and it tends to be effective.

The epilator is a more technologically advanced hair removal product and it is especially good for delicate skins. That explains why it is preferred by ladies. They always come in a handy, compact size, easy to carry and removes hair from the root with much less pain compared to other hair removal methods.

When a permanent hair removal product is what you want, then the laser hair removal process is probably what you need. How does it work? The laser beam to be used for the hair removal is directed at the area to be treated. The dark pigments of the hair follicle absorb the light energy from the laser. As the follicular pigment absorbs more and more of this light energy, the follicle dies. So, it cannot grow hairs again.

However, your skin texture and hair color also determine your success with laser hair removal procedures. It is generally believed that the process works best for people whose hair color is darker than their skin color and work less in people with very light or fair skin. However, laser hair treatment is available for a wide array of needs, from a small area of upper lip hair removal for women to full body back hair removal for men.

There are different types of laser hair removal, so no general limitation can be placed on your eligibility or otherwise for the procedure. If you are interested in the procedure, you can always find out from your local laser clinic, what their services are and which process is applicable to you.

Besides, your skin and hair color, not having undergone a tanning session or having applied any other mode of hair removal are factors that could determine the success of hair removal treatment with a laser.

Most people who have undergone laser hair removal treatment generally have had very little to complain about, but you never can tell. You should expect some blistering or reddening of the skin after a laser removal treatment, though it is always short lived and not much cause for concern. You should also expect some dark spots and bumps formed by the death and scarring of the follicles by the light energy of the laser beam. This too will fade out in no time.

One last thing you should have in mind when contemplating laser hair removal treatment is that it is not a completely permanent treatment. Though, it keeps the hair at bay for a longer period of time compared to other hair removal processes, after some time, you should expect a re-growth of some hair, though this might be fairer or thinner and less worrisome.

Price is a factor to think about when contemplating laser hair removal treatment, but if you are sure it is what you want, the price should not be a problem, as long as you can afford it. Depending on the treatment type and the specialist involved, the prices generally range from a few hundred bucks to a couple of grand. Again, if it’s what you want, the price is no problem.

Laser Hair Removal Ruby Laser Hair Removal

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

The Ruby laser is an infrared laser and was the first laser hair removal system on the market. As such, it has a longer track record than other laser hair removal options but is also an older technology.

Ruby lasers tend to be ideal for people who have light-colored skin and dark hair.

A Ruby laser works by emitting a pulse of light from a handheld device that is held up against the area of skin to be treated. Once the pulse has been delivered, the practitioner moves to the next area of skin and the process is repeated until the entire area has been covered.

Since it’s an older laser technology, there are other newer laser hair removal options that are becoming more readily available than the Ruby laser and that might be more effective, too.

Plus, there are also light-based hair removal systems on the market also based on newer technology that instead of using laser, use a pulsed light to get rid of unwanted hair that many people are turning to and that are widely available.

Still, the Ruby laser has a long track record that generally shows that it can offer long-term hair reduction when operated by a skilled and trained professional. The amount of pain felt by the patient tends to vary on a case by case basis.

Long term success and possible side effects of the hair removal will also vary by patient.

Temporary and permanent hair removal technology is evolving constantly and is relevant to both men and women who want to remove unwanted hair.

A Plain-English Guide to Laser Hair Removal

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Laser hair removal has become an increasingly popular method of depilation in recent years, for many good reasons. But like most other beauty treatments, it should be undertaken with caution and with a little bit of research under your belt, so here are the most important factors to bear in mind when considering whether laser hair removal is right for you.

First of all, what is laser hair removal? Unless you want to understand the physics of light, there’s a very simple definition. In the hands of an experienced beauty therapist, a handheld device emits a particular wavelength of light, which destroys the hair without harming the skin that surrounds it. It’s a simple technique that’s easy to administer, and more importantly, unlike waxing or sugaring, it’s relatively pain free.

There are, however, some disadvantages associated with this method of hair removal, and it’s unfortunately not suitable for everyone. Because the laser destroys dark material, the hair to be removed must be darker than the skin surrounding it, so those with very fair hair might not be eligible for laser hair removal.

Recently tanned skin is also unsuited to this method of hair removal, so be careful to avoid the sun before you schedule your appointment. Any type of skin damage may be exacerbated by the use of lasers, so take good care of your skin before you take that trip to the beauty salon, and postpone your appointment should you develop any skin injuries, such as a rash, or a cut.

Laser hair removal is sometimes advertised as a permanent system of hair removal, and while this method of depilation often does yield long-lasting results, there is not yet enough evidence to support a blanket claim of permanent hair loss. Laser hair removal is most effective on those with paler skins and dark hair, and many people matching this description have found that regrowth is minimal, with new hairs finer and lighter than prior to treatment.

Laser hair removal is more expensive than other methods of depilation, and as the area of unwanted hair can require a number of treatments before optimal results are seen, the cost can quickly add up. But for those who regular spend a small fortune on shavers, waxing strips and other hair removal tools, the effectiveness of laser surgery can make it a real money saver in the long run.

It is important to remember that a laser can be dangerous in the wrong hands, so be careful to find a professional and reputable salon to perform your laser hair removal. Find a beauty therapist with whom you feel comfortable, and ask any and all questions you need to put your mind at ease. Don’t be afraid to ask about your therapist’s qualifications and experience – all laser hair removal practitioners should be licensed physicians or registered nurses.

Laser hair removal is an effective technique than can bring wonderful results. Relatively painless – expect a slight tingling sensation when the laser is in use – and long-lasting, laser hair removal is, however, a technique that requires skilled hands. Treat your skin with the respect it deserves and find a well-qualified and experienced practitioner to perform the procedure, and say goodbye to that unwanted hair.

After Effects of Laser Hair Removal – Should I Be Afraid

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Considering laser hair removal? This relatively safe procedure is the perfect way to remove hair for an extended period of time. It is much faster, less painful and lasts longer than waxing or other types of hair removal. But, is there anything that you should know before having the procedure done? Are you wondering if in fact there are more facts that you should have on this before you begin?

What’s Going To Happen To Me?

For many, the worry is that you will not know what is about to happen. It sounds pretty scary having a laser come at you while you are laying there vulnerable. But, the fact of the matter is that this is a very safe procedure. The laser will be worked by an experienced technician and you should make sure of this. It will feel like a soft tingling sensation across your skin. It is much less painful than waxing is. For most people, the pain is tolerable and there are few complications. They can go back to their normal routine right away.

Possible after-effects

For some, there are a few things that can happen to the skin. All of these conditions are mild and should not be considered something that will happen as the risk is low anyway.

Redness – The first thing that you will notice may be redness to the area that has been treated. In most cases, this is only temporary and will be gone within a few minutes. It is the same basic reaction that you would have if you were to pluck a hair or to damage the skin lightly.

Swelling – Your skin can seem to be a little swollen in the area that is treated. This again is just a reaction to being “hurt” and will go away within a few minutes or so.

Change in skin color – In some very rare cases, there is the potential for the lightening or darkening of the skin. This is very rare and the risk can be minimized by simply insuring you are working with an experienced technician for your laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal is a relatively safe procedure that doesn’t often go wrong unless there is inexperience or human error, which is rare. So, hopefully we have convinced you that the after effects are minimal and quite tolerable to most people.

Effective Body Hair Removal Techniques

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

If it’s within your budget, the fastest way to remove unwanted body hair is by undergoing laser treatments. Although this is the most expensive approach, laser hair removal is the most effective at permanently eliminating body hair. Unlike electrolysis, where each hair follicle must be dealt with individually making the process extremely time-consuming and painful, laser therapy can impact several follicles simultaneously, which greatly speeds up the process. It’s great for removing hair from the back and chest, arms and legs.

As stated already however, the costs are extreme. To do an area as large as the back will cost several thousand dollars, and that’s per treatment. Several treatments are necessary because the laser technique can only impact hair that is currently in a growing stage. Also, there will be places where hair will regrow and although it will regrow finer and lighter, in order to be permanent, the hair follicle needs to be rendered incapable of growing new hair.

The next best method of removing body hair is waxing. Far less expensive than laser treatments and even electrolysis, waxing works by extracting hairs out of their shafts. Because the hair follicle is not specifically and purposely damaged, hair will regrow, but it will take several weeks for it to reappear. Repetitive application of this hair removal process may ultimately affect the follicle and cause hair growth to cease, however, this is not guaranteed which is why waxing cannot be considered a permanent hair removal method.

Waxing, or sugaring if you’re sensitive to wax or prefer an organic solution, works by applying a layer of cold or hot wax or a sugar-based mixture directly on the area where hair is to be removed. After allowing to harden it is very quickly peeled away from the skin, in the opposite direction of the hair growth and viola – the body hair is pulled free from that area. The process is repeated until the entire body surface is free of hair. It is possible to do this at home, but since most of us have a low tolerance to self-inflicted pain, you’ll get better and faster results if you leave this type of work to someone else, at least for the first few times.

Laser Hair Removal – What Is It

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Laser hair removal has been around for sometime. It’s considered to be one of the safest ways for permanent hair removal. Laser hair removal is a low-energy laser applied over the area of unwanted hair. Low-energy laser damages the hair follicles. The hair gets burned-out without damaging skin or any other tissues.

When laser hair removal is done professionally, there’s a patch test first. This way you’ll get the right laser and intensity. Don’t let anybody treat you without doing patch test. One of the main benefits of laser hair removal is that it can be done on a large area of the body in one session. Procedure is little bit uncomfortable and many people experience little pain, but it doesn’t require anesthesia. Local or topical anesthetic is usually applied if person experiences a higher degree of discomfort.

Treatment is very effective. After several sessions, about 95 percent of unwanted hair has been removed. One huge benefit of laser hair removal is that it doesn’t require any medications, needles or follow-ups. You don’t need to go to hospital either.

After laser hair removal session, skin might get little red where treatment was applied. It will not last longer than 24 hours. Unwanted hairs will fall off in 1-2 weeks after treatment.

If you have a darker skin color and you are having a skin-lightening procedure such as bleaching, read carefully. Bleaching procedure should be done before getting laser hair removal treatment. Remember that don’t get laser hair removal within 10 days to two weeks after bleaching procedure.

If you want to boost effectiveness of laser hair removal, shave the unwanted hair couple days earlier before treatment. This way laser will have easier access to hair follicles.

Warning Signs of Laser Hair Removal Clinics

Friday, February 27th, 2009

The following checklist will help to steer you away from undesirable laser hair removal clinics. If any of the following are true, ask more questions or consider another clinic or spa before proceeding:

  • No physical exam prior to undergoing the laser hair removal treatment.

  • No required allergy testing to the applied numbing gel, such as “Lidocaine”.

  • The credentials of the person doing the procedure do not include national certification (i.e. only trained by the laser manufacturer).

  • The certified doctor is absent during the laser hair removal treatment.

  • The spa or practice is unlicensed specifically in laser hair removal.

  • The clinic’s success and/or failure rate is not discussed prior to treatment.

  • The procedure’s possible side effects are not discussed prior to treatment.

  • Claims of “permanent” or “painless” hair removal are used to encourage your purchase of the treatment.

  • A medical malpractice claim has been settled in the past.

  • The local Better Business Bureau has any unresolved, negative ratings for this specific clinic, spa, or doctor.

Keep these warning signs in mind when selecting a clinic or spa for laser hair removal treatment. It may require spending a little extra for the quality service, but the result will be much closer to what you are expecting.

Dramatic Growth In Number Of Men Wanting Laser Hair Removal

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Laser Hair Removal – 1 in 10 patients are now men
Analysis of patient trends over the last 2 years has concluded that where as 1 in 22 (4.5%) patients were men April 2004, 1 in 10 patients were men in April 2006 (sample size 826).

Background
Laser hair removal is one of the most popular laser-based aesthetic procedures since it can provide permanent reduction of unwanted hair. The most common areas treated are the upper lip, chin, bikini line, neck, chest, back, stomach, legs, and underarms. The most popular area requiring treatment by men is the back and shoulders area.

Lasers are well suited for the removal of unwanted hair, because with the right selection of parameters, they can be used as a non-invasive method to disable the hair without damaging the surrounding skin. This is why laser hair removal is fast replacing waxing, shaving and electrolysis as the best method of making us hair free.

Laser Hair Removal is not for everyone
Laser hair removal works best on new hairs that are just starting to grow. This means you will need 6 or sometimes more treatments in the same area to deal with all the hairs as they begin their growth cycle.

What’s more, it probably won’t remove 100% of hair permanently, although any re-growth is likely to be paler and weaker. Worst of all, Lasers are targeted at pigmented tissue, so they are not as effective on white, grey or platinum blonde hair.

Laser Hair Removal Toss the Razor

Permanent Hair Removal with Lasers? Can You Really Kiss the Razor Bye Bye?

Permanent hair removal via new laser technology is quickly becoming the method of choice for thousands of women to permanently banish those long leg and underarm shaving sessions, and to leave them soft and smooth without wasting precious minutes every day. So, what is the cost of laser hair removal, and what does the process entail? Well, I will tell you

First of all, not everyone is eligible for laser hair removal, so you should definitely consult with a specialist or specialist organization before you even consider this route for permanent hair removal.

While laser hair removal is much less expensive than the (somewhat painful) method of removing hair called electrolysis, some individuals may only be eligible for electrolysis due to physical and hair characteristics which make laser hair removal very difficult or impossible.

First of all, any person who is exceptionally dark in skin pigmentation would not be a good candidate for this procedure, and may want to look into alternatives to lasers to remove unwanted body or facial hair. Additionally, people with tanned skin and light hair, or people with generally very light hair would not be good candidates.

Cost of Laser Hair Removal?

The cost can vary considerably, depending on whether you choose to do a large area of your body, like your legs (which will cost considerably more), or just a small area, like facial hair above the lip and so on. Generally each session costs roughly $500 for smaller or medium size areas, and depending on the surface area covered will cost more per session, and require return sessions to get all of the hair removed.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Well, I’ve got good and bad news here. You will require return treatments to keep the hair gone, and to get all of it, and contrary to what most people believe, you will not be able to hang up the razor forever, because you will still have a few stray hairs here and there. Trust me, it would be nearly impossible to get every single hair, maybe some day, but this technology has not come this far yet today. I will say this, you will be considerably smoother and have to worry about shaving way less though, so it’s still worth it.

And get this, while they know that laser hair removal makes your hair fall out, they still are not exactly sure why. In other words, there is conjecture that the laser action and heat below the surface of the skin breaks the hair follicle apart and destroys that hair permanently, but they don’t have 100% conclusive evidence of that theory yet. What happens after a laser treatment is that over the course of the next few weeks or months after treatment, the hair on the treated area just falls out. For whatever reason, laser hair removal tends to work best for people with a fair complexion and darker hair.

Interesting huh? So, if you were considering having your hair removed by a laser professionally, whether it be for your legs, or facial hairs or any other unwanted bodily hair, hopefully now you can go into it a little more educated!

The Laser Hair Removal Process

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Laser Hair Removal is becoming more popular then ever for the removal of unwanted body hair. Before making the decision to go forward with laser hair removal it is important to understand the removal process and to determine if you would make an ideal candidate for laser hair removal.

Below we are going to talk about some of the most common questions asked before making a decision to get laser hair removal done.

Is it safe?

Yes, the removal process is safe. Some patients may notice pinkness or redness to the skin on the treated area. Most commonly the color will go back to normal in a few minutes up to a few hours. In a few rare cases it may take a few days for the normal skin color to appear. The skin color variation will depend greatly on the process used during the hair removal as there is more than one process available.

What is the laser hair removal process?

The laser hair removal process works by sending a beam of laser light to a group of hair follicles with enough power to disable or destroy the root, but not enough power to harm the surrounding skin. The laser beam finds the hair follicles by targeting melanin (the substance that gives skin and hair dark color). People that have dark hair and light skin are the ideal candidate for laser hair removal. However, it is important to note that the laser process will not work on those people that have red, grey or real blonde hair.

Is the hair removal process painful?

The answer to this question varies greatly by patient as everyone feels pain differently and no two people are the same. Some patients have said it feels like a pinch while other patients noted it feels like a rubber band snapping your skin. For the most part most patients have noted mild discomfort and in those cases the doctor will usually provide the patient with a mild anesthetic during the hair removal process.

How long is the hair removal process? And how many treatments will I need?

Both of these questions don’t have a single definitive answer. The length of time for removal will depend on the area being treated. How many treatments needed also have many different variables to consider making the answer different per case – skin tone, hair coloring and the coarseness of hair are all variable that help determine how many hair removal treatments will be needed.

While these are our opinions on the laser hair removal process, it is best to do your research and find out the specifics for your removal process. It’s always best to get more then one opinion and be thorough before making your decision.
